Albanian language, origin and dialects spoken over the world.

Origin and History

With about 7.5 million speakers, Albanian is an Indo-European language spoken by the Albanians in the Balkans and the Albanian diaspora in the Americas, Europe and Oceania, forming an independent branch of the Indo-European languages and not closely connected with any other language.

Albanian is believed to be the descendant of one of antiquity's Paleo-Balkan languages. There are numerous modern scholars and linguists who think that the Albanian language may have descended from a southern Illyrian dialect spoken in almost the same area in classical times for more historical and geographical purposes than specifically linguistic ones.

Dialects

Gheg and Tosk, the two major Albanian dialects, are largely characterized by phonological variations and are mutually understandable, with Gheg speaking to the north and Tosk speaking to the south of the river Shkumbin. Their features in the treatment of both native words and loanwords suggest that the dialectal split happened during the region's Christianization (4th century AD) and at the time of the Slavic migration to the Balkans, with the Shkumbin that straddled the Jireček line being the historical border between Gheg and Tosk. Standard Albanian, based on the Tosk dialect, is a standardised version of spoken Albanian. It is the official language of Albania and Kosovo and the co-official language of Italy, Montenegro, Romania, and Serbia in North Macedonia, as well as a minority language.

In Croatia, Greece, Italy, as well as in Romania, Turkey and Ukraine, centuries-old populations speaking Albanian dialects are scattered.

Countries spoken

The official language of Albania and Kosovo and the co-official language of North Macedonia is the Albanian language. In Croatia, Italy, Montenegro, Romania and in Serbia, Albanian is a known minority language. A minority in Greece also speak Albanian.

Albanian is Italy's third most spoken language, leading to massive Albanian immigration to Italy. In Southern Italy, Italy has a historical Albanian population of about 500,000. About 1 million Albanians are scattered through Germany, Switzerland, and Austria from Kosovo. The Albanian language in Switzerland is the sixth most spoken language, with 176,293 native speakers.

As of 15 January 2019, Albanian has become the official language in North Macedonia. In the United States, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Canada, there are substantial numbers of Albanian speakers. There are about 250,000 Albanian speakers in the United States and Canada. In Turkey, nearly 1.3 million people of Albanian origin live and more than 500,000 identify their heritage, language and culture. There are about 18,000 Albanians in Egypt. The Albanian diaspora groups living in Australia and New Zealand also speaks Albanian.
