Bahasa language, origin and dialects spoken over the world.

Origin and History

The roots of "Bahasa" The term "Bahasa" means "language" and stems from the Sanskrit word meaning "spoken language" etymologically.

Bahasa Indonesia is the official language of Indonesia. It is the language that unifies the fourth most populated nation in the world, a country composed of almost 18,000 islands and inhabited by 750 local languages and dialects spoken by 350 ethnic groups. The standardised variant of Malay, Bahasa Indonesia, is the sixth most spoken language in the world.

Indonesian, spoken in Indonesia, is a variant of Malay. As Indonesian Malay (called Bahasa Indonesia in Indonesia) is nearly identical with Bahasa Melayu, another variety of Malay, as spoken in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, the word 'Indonesian' is political rather than linguistic. In the early 20th century, the word "Indonesian" was adopted, and Indonesian became official language.

Due to strategic business and security priorities in the Muslim world, Bahasa Indonesian has been identified as a vital language. Indonesia is Southeast Asia's most populated country (the world's fourth largest population) and the world's most populous majority Muslim nation.

Indonesian belongs to the family of languages of Austronesia. One of the world's main linguistic families is the Austronesian family of languages. Indonesian belongs to the Western branch of the Malayo-Polynesian group of the Austronesian family, according to the most generally agreed grouping of the Austronesian languages.

While there are some lexical variations between the two varieties of Malay, spoken in Indonesia on the one hand and Malaysia on the other hand, the dialectal differences between the speakers of Indonesian are negligible.

Countries spoken

There are approximately 35,000,000 Indonesian first language speakers and about 150,000,000 Indonesian second language speakers. In the Netherlands, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and the USA, Indonesian is spoken outside Indonesia.
