Catalan language, origin and dialects spoken over the world.
Origin and history
The official language of Andorra is Catalan, and the co- official language of three autonomous communities in eastern Spain: Catalonia,
the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands. Catalan is a Western Romance language originating from Vulgar Latin, known as Valencian in the Valencian Community and Carche. In the Italian commune of Alghero, it also has semi-official status.
The Països Catalans or "Catalan Countries" are also called the Catalan/Valencian speaking territories. It is said that the Catalan language originated from
Vulgar Latin around the Eastern Pyrenees in the Middle Ages. Spain's nineteenth century saw a literary renaissance in Catalonia, culminating in the early 1900s. Catalan is spoken in the department of the Pyrénées-Orientales in France and in two other regions in eastern Spain: the eastern strip of Aragon and the Carche region in the Murcia region.
There is a relative uniformity in the dialects of the Catalan language, especially when compared to other Romance languages, both in terms of vocabulary, grammar, syntax, morphology, and phonology.
Mutual intelligibility and exceedingly high among its dialects, with estimates ranging from 90% to 95%. The only exception is the isolated, idiosyncratic dialect of Alguerese.
In parts of Spain (in Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands), France (in the Pyrénées-Orientales area), Andorra and even Italy, Catalan is spoken natively.
Of those who speak it natively, almost all are bilingual, depending on where they live, speaking either French, Spanish (Castilian) or Italian in addition to Catalan. In the world, thereare over 9 million people who can speak Catalan, and over 4 million speak Catalan as a native language.
