Farsi language, origin and dialects spoken over the world.

Origin and History

Farsi is a western Iranian language that belongs to the Iranian branch of the Indo-Iranian subdivision of the Indo-European languages. Persian is a multicentre language primarily spoken and officially used within Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan in three mutually intelligible standard varieties, namely Persian Iran, Persian Dari and Persian Tajik. It is formally written in the Persian alphabet in Iran and Afghanistan, a derivation of the Arabic script, and in the Tajik alphabet in Tajikistan, a derivation of Cyrillic.

Dialects

Farsi is embedded in the group of languages spoken in West Iran, which includes other languages spoken in the region, such as Tajik and Dari. One of the two subgroups of the Indo-Iranian language family is West Iran. Indo-Iranian languages are also widely used in the country. There are now two main variants of the Farsi language. The language may be divided into the Farsi spoken in Iran and the variant of the language spoken in countries such as Afghanistan and Pakistan, which is more generally known as Dari Persian. Persian may not be spoken or heard as commonly as it was in the past. Farsi is a subgroup of the Dari and Tajik languages of Western Iranian; the less closely related Luri, Bakhtiari, and Kumzari languages; and the Fars Province's non-Persian dialects.

Countries spoken

Farsi, like other Iranian languages, Turkic languages, Armenian, Georgian and Indo-Aryan languages, has had a considerable influence on its neighbouring languages. It also exercised some influence on Arabic though, under mediaeval Arab rule, borrowing vocabulary from it. The word Persephone can also be used to refer to the speaker of Farsi. There are roughly 110 million Farsi speakers worldwide, including Persians, Tajik, Hazaras, Caucasian Tats and Aimaqs. Farsi has a long history and used to be spoken and readily understood by people in a large region that extended from the Middle East to India.
