Greek language, origin and dialects spoken over the world.

Origin and History

Greek, native to Greece, Cyprus, Albania, other areas of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea, is a separate branch of the Indo-European language family. It has the longest recorded history of any living Indo-European language, covering written documents of at least 3,400 years. For the better part of its existence, the writing style was the Greek alphabet; other forms were previously used, such as Linear B and the Cypriot syllabary.

The Greek language has a significant role in the Western world's culture. Greek roots are also used to coin new words for other languages; the main origins of foreign scientific vocabulary are Greek and Latin. Ancient Greek literature, beginning with Homer's epics, contains several works in the European canon of enduring significance. Greek is also the language that composes much of the basic texts of science and philosophy. The Christian Bible's New Testament was written in Greek as well. Greek was a widely spoken language in the Mediterranean world during ancient times. Ultimately, it would become the official language of the Byzantine Empire and would evolve into Medieval Greek. Greek is the official language of Greece and Cyprus, and one of the 24 official languages of the European Union, in its current form.

Dialects

In classical antiquity, prior to the production of the traditional Koine Greek of the Hellenistic period, ancient Greek was divided into many varieties. Most of these types are known from inscriptions only, but a few of them, primarily Aeolic, Doric, and Ionic, are also represented alongside the dominant Attic form of literary Greek in the literary canon. Similarly, modern Greek, most derived from Koine Greek, is split into many dialects.

Countries spoken

At least 13.4 million people in Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Albania and Turkey and the Greek diaspora are speaking today. There are a considerable number of Greek speakers in the United States and Australia, and this is the largest group outside Europe. In a few other nations across Europe and the Middle East, Greek speakers also appear. According to the Ethnologist, here are a handful with the most in the descending order of the speaker population: Italy, Ukraine, Turkey, Romania, and Hungary.
