Origin and History
The language of Gujarati is an Indo-Aryan language native to the Indian state of Gujarat and primarily spoken by the Gujarati people. The broader Indo-European language family comprises Gujarati. The language of Gujarati is more than 700 years old. It is the official language of the State of Gujarat in India and the official language of the Union Territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu in India. As of 2011, Gujarati is the sixth most widely spoken language by the number of native speakers in India, spoken by 55.5 million speakers, comprising about 4.5 percent of the total Indian population. By number of native speakers, as of 2007, it is the 26th most widely spoken language in the world.
