Igbo language, origin and dialects spoken over the world.

Origin and History

Igbo or Ibo, one of West Africa's main languages, is spoken by 18 million people in Nigeria. It belongs to the Niger-Congo language family in the Benue-Congo group. In southern Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Haiti, Barbados, Belize, Trinidad and Tobago, Igbo is spoken, supplying the Jamaican Patois with a large chunk of vocabulary.

In the region around the confluence of the Niger and Benue rivers, the language is believed to have arisen about the 9th century AD, and later spread across a large area of south-eastern Nigeria.

Dialects

There are about 30 Igbo dialects, some of which are not intelligible to one another. The development of a consistent spoken and written Igbo has been hampered by the vast number of dialects. Normal literary Igbo is not widely recognised by speakers of other dialects, based on the Owerri and Umuahia dialects. The goal of standard Igbo is to use terms from other Igbo dialects as well as other l loanwords from other languages.

Countries spoken

In southern Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Haiti, Barbados, Belize, Trinidad and Tobago, Igbo is spoken; it also provided the Jamaican Patois with a big chunk of words.
