Italian language, origin and dialects spoken over the world.

Origin and History

Italian, a descendant of Vulgar Latin, is a Romance language. Standard Italian, in particular with its Florentine dialect, is based on Tuscan and is therefore an Italo-Dalmatian language, a classification which includes most of the other languages of central and southern Italian and the extinct Dalmatian language. The developed written language in Europe was Latin during the Middle Ages, but the vast majority of individuals were illiterate, and only a few were well versed in the language.

Dialects

Most will instead speak a local vernacular on the Italian peninsula, as in most of Europe. As they are generally referred to, these dialects developed over the course of centuries from Vulgar Latin, untouched by standardised rules and teachings. In every way, they are not "dialects" of standard Italian, which originated as one of these local languages, but the sister languages of Italian. Mutual intelligibility with Italian, as with Romance languages in general, varies greatly. At all stages (phonology, morphology, grammar, lexicon, pragmatics), the Romance dialects of Italy can vary greatly from Italian and are categorised typologically as distinct languages.

The Italian linguistic heritage is one of the richest and most diverse in Europe, considering an outline of the Italian dialects. In fact, among the numerous Italian dialects, there are not just those that belong to the Romance language branch (which includes Italian, Spanish and French), Italian is just a dialect that "made it," and appeared to stand out from the other dialects spoken in the Italian territory, being the national tongue, but also those originating from the Germanic, Greek and Slavic languages.

Countries spoken

Italian is mostly spoken in Italy, Switzerland, San Marino, Vatican City, Slovenia and Croatia as a Romance language. In Switzerland, it is spoken in the south-eastern cantons of Graubünden and Ticino. It is spoken primarily in the county of Istria in the northwest of Croatia, and it is spoken in the neighbouring region of Istria in southwestern Slovenia. In other countries, including Malta, Monaco, Romania, France, Eritrea, Somalia, Brazil, Australia and the USA, there are also Italian speakers.
