Swahili language, origin and dialects spoken over the world.

Origin and history

Often known by its native name, Kiswahili, Swahili is a Bantu language (of the Congo clan) and the Swahili people's native language. Swahili is a language related to other parts of East and Southern Africa in the African Great Lakes region, including Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, parts of Malawi, Somalia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, Zambia and. Comorian, spoken in the Comoros Islands, is often considered to be a Swahili dialect, although it is considered by other authorities to be a separate language. In Kenya and parts of Uganda, Sheng is a blend of Swahili and English that is widely spoken.

The precise number of Swahili speakers is uncertain and is a matter of dispute, be they native or second-language speakers. Swahili is also one of the working languages of the African Union and is formally recognised by the East African Community as a liaison language.

Dialects

Around 15 major Swahili dialects are in use, as well as some pidgin variants. KiUnguja (or Kiunguja), spoken in Zanzibar and in the mainland areas of Tanzania, are the three most important dialects; kiMvita (or Kimvita), spoken in Mombasa and other parts of Kenya; and kiAmu (or Kiamu), spoken on Lamu Island and neighbouring parts of the coast. Standard Swahili is based on the dialect of KiUnguja.

Countries spoken

In Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, Swahili is the national language and the official language of the Eastern African Community, which includes Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan. The use of Swahili in southern, western, and northern Africa is spreading.
