Korean language, origin and dialects spoken over the world.

Origin and History

In northeast Asia, Korean, known as Kugo in the language itself, is the language of the Korean Peninsula. There are 20 million speakers in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK, or North Korea) and 42 million in the Republic of Korea (ROK, or South Korea). Almost 2 million people in China still speak Korean, mostly in provinces bordering North Korea. There are several hypotheses about the Korean language's origin and association. Its long history of contact with Chinese and Japanese is what makes Korean linguistic association so difficult to develop. Korean belongs to the family of Austronesian languages, according to the so-called Southern hypothesis. According to the Northern hypothesis, however, backed by a number of linguists, Korean is a member of the Altaic family of languages. At the same time, some linguists point to some parallels between Korean and Japanese, meaning that they may belong to the Japanese language group. With the question of Korean membership being unresolved, it is classified as an independent language by several outlets.

Dialects

Nine different dialects are present in Korean. South and North Korea each have traditional Korean dialects of their own, which are used in an official setting. It is the Seoul dialect in the South. In the North, Seoul's dialect is blended with the dialect of the city of Pyeongyang. Under these two main divides, considering the small scale of the Korean peninsula, there are various regional dialects, many of which are mutually intelligible. The Han dialect is the basis of Modern Korean. The standard in South Korea is based on the Seoul dialect and the standard in North Korea is based on the P'yəngyang dialect. There are two standard variants in modern Korean.

Countries spoken

About 75 million people worldwide speak Korean. In South and North Korea, where it is the official language, the majority of the speakers reside. The cities with the most Koreans in them are Beijing, Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, Osaka, Atlanta, and Sydney, outside the Korean peninsula. The highest overall number of Korean speakers was in the United States, China, and Japan.
