Origin and History
The Latvian language, also known as Latvian Latviesu Valoda. It is an eastern Baltic language predominantly spoken in Latvia and belongs to the Baltic branch of the Indo-European language family. Originally, Latvia was inhabited by ancient people called the Balts. Latvian is the official language of Latvia and is used by a part of the population of the country as their mother tongue. In the Indo-European language family, the Latvian language has its origins (native name: latviešu valoda).
Latvian has many mutually intelligible regional dialects, considering the small size of the country. There are three dialect groups in Latvian: East or High Latvian; West Latvian; and Central Latvian. The last is more conservative and was the base for the literary vocabulary of today.
It is most common in Latvia, with a share of around 56 percent. A total of roughly 1.1 million people speak Latvian as their mother tongue globally. It is also spoken in the United Kingdom, Australia, Belarus, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Estonia, Lithuania, New Zealand, Russia, Sweden, Ukraine and the USA.
