Malay language, origin and dialects spoken over the world.

Origin and History

The Malay language, a member of the Western or Indonesian branch of the Austronesian (Malayo-Polynesian) language family, is spoken as a native language by more than 33,000,000 individuals scattered across the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo and the various smaller islands of the region, and is commonly used as a second language in Malaysia and Indonesia. The Arabic script was modified to write the Malay language when Islam arrived in Southeast Asia during the 14th century. The Arabic script was replaced by the Latin alphabet in the 17th century, under the influence of the Dutch and British.

Dialects

The most significant of the different dialects of Malay is that of the southern Malay Peninsula, which is the basis of the modern Malay language and the official language of the Republic of Indonesia, Bahasa Indonesia or Indonesian. In the East Indian archipelago, a Malay pidgin called Bazaar Malay (melayu pasar, "market Malay") was widely used as a lingua franca and was the basis of the colonial language used in Indonesia by the dutch. In Malaysia, the variant of Bazaar Malay used in Chinese merchant communities is called Baba Malay. Iban (Sea Dayak), Brunei Malay, Sambas Malay, Kutai Malay, and Banjarese are among the languages or dialects closely related to Malay spoken on Borneo.

Countries spoken

Malay is closely related to several of Sumatra's other languages (Minangkabau, Kerintji, Rejang) and obviously, but not so closely, to the other Austronesian languages of Sumatra, Borneo, Java, and Vietnam's Cham. Malay is a Malay language spoken in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, and Thailand. There are also approximately 170 million Indonesian speakers, which is a variant of Malay.
