Origin and History

Malayalam belongs to the Dravidian language family of the Southern branch. While closely related to Tamil, Sanskrit influences Malayalam more than Tamil. Scholars claim that in the 9th century AD, the shared ancestor of Tamil and Malayalam split, giving birth to Malayalam as a separate language from Tamil. Subsequently, Tamil impacted Malayalam's early growth because it was the language of scholarship and administration. While closely related to Tamil, Sanskrit influences Malayalam more than Tamil. Of India's 22 official languages and 14 regional languages, Malayalam is one of them
