Pashto - Pakistani language, origin and dialects spoken over the world.

Origin and History

Pakistan has dozens of languages spoken as their first language. There are atleast 10 million speakers each in Pakistan who speak atleast one or five languages. – Urdu, Pashto, Punjabi, Sindhi and Saraiki. Most of the Pakistani languages belong to the Indo-Iranian group and Indo-European family.

Pakistan has several other regional languages, such as Punjabi, Pashto, Saraiki, Sindhi, Balochi, Kashmiri, Gujari, Hindko, Shina, Brahui, Shina, Khowar, Balti, Dhatki, Marwari, Haryanvi, Wakhi and Burushaski. Among these, four are known as the provincial languages – Pashto, Punjabi, Sindhi, and Balochi.

Modern Pashto-speaking communities in Pakistan are found mostly in the cities of Hyderabad in Sindh and Karachi. Pashto is also spoken in some parts of the Punjab province in Attock and Mianwali districts, areas of Islamabad and Gilgit-Baltistan.

However in Pakistan, Urdu and English are the two official languages and unfortunately Pashto has no official status at any level. Pashto is also broadly spoken in the neighbouring Afghanistan where it has the status of an official language.

Dialects

We understand that there are three major dialect patterns within the various individual dialects, and they can be classified; as Pakhto, which is of Northern (Peshawar) variety, and the softer Pashto which is of the southern variety mainly spoken in the areas of Quetta.

Countries spoken

There are about 50-60 million Pashto speakers in both Pakistan and Afghanistan. Especially In Pakistan, about 15% of the population speak in Pashto. They are mainly located in the north western province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and northern districts of Balochistan. Pashto-speakers are mainly found in the other major cities of Pakistan, like Karachi and Sindh.

The Pakistani Pashto speakers have spread and migrated to all parts of the world and today we have Pashto speakers who are nationals of USA, UK, Canada, Australia and other countries of Europe.
