Spanish language, origin and dialects spoken over the world.
Origin and history
Spanish is part of the Indo-European language family's Ibero-Romance group of languages, which developed during the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century from various dialects of Vulgar Latin in Iberia. About 360 million people worldwide speak Spanish as their first language. Mexico has the highest number of speakers at the beginning of the 21st century (more than 85 million), followed by Colombia (more than 40 million), Argentina (more than 35 million),Spain (more than 30 million) and United States (more than 31 million).
Spanish is one of the six official languages of the United Nations and is also used by the European Union, the Association of American States, the Union of Nations of South America, the Community of States of Latin America and the Caribbean, the African Union and several other international bodies as an official language.
The dialect used by most Spanish speakers is essentially Castilian, and in many American countries, Castellano is also the term used for the language. The ascendancy of Castilian among Spanish dialects is the result of the particular circumstances of the Reconquista (conquest of Moorish Spain by the Christian states of Spain, in 1492), with which the language spread to the south. Having established itself in Spain, Castilian dialect, possibly in its southern, or Andalusian, form, was then exported to New World during the Age of Discovery from the mid-15th to the mid-16th century. The Castilian dialect, probably in its southern, or Andalusian, type, was then transmitted to the New World during the Age of Exploration from the mid-15th to the mid-16th century, having developed itself in Spain.
Spanish is the official language of 18 countries in the Americas (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela) and Puerto Rico, along with Spain in Europe and Equatorial Guinea in Africa, respectively.
Today, with approximately 500 million native speakers, it is a global language, especially in Spain and the Americas. After Mandarin Chinese, it is the second-most spoken native language in the world and the fourth-most spoken language in the world, after English, Mandarin Chinese, and Hindi.
