Swedish language, origin and dialects spoken over the world.
Origin and history
Swedish is a northern Germanic language that is predominantly spoken by 10 million people in Sweden (as the sole official language) and in parts of Finland, where Finnish is equally legal. With Norwegian and Danish, it is largely mutually understandable, although the degree of mutual intelligibility is largely dependent on the speaker's dialect and accent.
Swedish is a descendant of Old Norse, the common language during the Viking Era of the Germanic peoples living in Scandinavia. It has more speakers than any other language in northern German. The national language which evolved from Central Swedish is standard Swedish, spoken by most Swedes.
Although there are still distinct regional varieties and rural dialects, the written language is uniform and standardised. Due to the differences in tone, accent and intonation, written Norwegian and Danish are generally more easily understood by Swedish speakers than the spoken languages.
In general, Swedish is divided into three main dialect regions: Northern Swedish (Norrland), Eastern Swedish (Swedish Finland, Swedish Estonian) and Svea, Gutniska (Gutamal, Gotlandic, Gutnic). The Svea variety spoken in Stockholm, Uppsala, Lund, Gothenburg, and Helsinki is the basis of Standard Swedish. It is cultivated by the official Swedish language board, Svenska språknämnden, which sets a standard for the language.
In Ukraine, too, there is a small Swedish-speaking minority, owing to those who settled there after being forced out of Estonia in the 18th century, which the Russian Empire had scooped up at the time.
In the other Scandinavian countries (Denmark and Norway), as well as the United States, the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, France, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium and Australia, other somewhat significant concentrations of Swedish speakers can also be found.
