Tigrinya is an Ethiopian language that is spoken in Eritrea and in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia. The global diaspora of these regions is now speaking out. In Eritrea, where it is the de facto national language, Tigrigna is spoken by 2.5 million people. It is the country's most concise language and is used in mass media, education and by government (Ethnologue).

In Eritrea, Tigrinya is the official language and is also spoken by the Tigray region's global diaspora. Tigrinya is also spoken by a part of the population in 1 more country as a mother tongue. In the Afro-Asiatic language family, the Tigrinya language has its origins.

Dialects

Tigrinya is a member of the Afro-Asiatic language family's Semitic branch. Amharic, Tigre and Ge'ez, an extinct language that is still used in religious culture, are closely related. It is related to Arabic and Hebrew in a distant way. In Tigrigna, there is no substantial dialectal variation, but scholars usually break the language into two dialects that are mutually intelligible: Asmara spoken in Eritrea and Tigray spoken in Ethiopia.

Countries spoken

It is most common in Eritrea, with a share of around 49 percent. Tigrinya is spoken by a total of approximately 8.3 million people worldwide as their mother tongue.
