Origin and History
The national and official language of Vietnam is Vietnamese. Vietnamese is an Austro-Asian language originating from Vietnam. Over 70 million persons, many times as many as the rest of the Austroasiatic family combined, speak Vietnamese natively. It is the Vietnamese (Kinh) people's primary language, as well as a first or second language for other ethnic groups in Vietnam.
Vietnamese is an analytic language with a phonemic tone, like many other languages in Southeast Asia and East Asia. With subject-verb-object order and modifiers following the words they modify, it has head-initial directionality. It also uses classifiers for nouns. Chinese and French have been highly influenced by its vocabulary. Historically, Vietnamese has been written using Ch' Nôm, a script using Chinese characters and characters invented locally. The official adoption of the modern Vietnamese alphabet (Ch' Qu'c Ng'), which uses the Latin (Roman) script, led to French colonial rule. To denote tones and pronunciation, it uses diacritics. Although Ch' Nôm fell out of use in Vietnam at the beginning of the 20th century, it is still sometimes used in China by the Gin people.
There are three Vietnamese (Ethologue) mutually intelligible dialects: Northern, Hanoi dialect accepted as the standard, Central, Hu' dialect, or High Annamese and Southern, dialect of Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), or Cochinchinese Vietnamese is spoken by a majority of the population in 3 more countries as a mother tongue.
Vietnamese speakers are also present in other areas of South-East Asia, East Asia, North America, Europe, United Kingdom and Australia because of immigrants. Vietnamese has also been officially accepted in the Czech Republic as a minority language.
With a share of around 87%, it is the most common in Vietnam. A total of approximately 85.6 million people speak Vietnamese as their mother tongue worldwide.
