The people who speak this language refer to it as Beria, Beri, the endonym of the people of Zaghawa, and Zaghawa for "mouth" It has been estimated that between 750,000 and 1,350,000 speakers of Zaghawa live mainly in Chad and the Sudan region of Darfur.

Dialects

There are three different dialects (Kube, Tuba and Wagi), and this corpus records Sudan's Wagi dialect. The data was collected by Birgit Hellwig during an MA-level field methods class at the University of Cologne in 2014/15.

Countries spoken

In Sudan (North Darfur state) and Chad, Zaghawa is said to be spoken by a total of 169,000 speakers. Zaghawa is a language spoken between Sudan and Chad in the border zone.
